The Duet Club is pleased to present these talented performers in recital to introduce the 122nd season of the oldest music club in Canada!

Andrea Van Pelt, third year piano performance student at the University of Toronto, began studying piano at age 5 in Stratford, Ontario. Previously under the inspiration of Olga Tchernak in Ancaster, Andrea is currently working with Andrew Markow. She began studying violin at age 8 with Peter Bartley of London, and completed her Grade 8 violin with Lance Elbeck in Hamilton. Having completed RCM ACRT in piano performance with distinction before entering university, Andrea has had the pleasure of working with many renowned pianists and teachers. Andrea’s participation in music festivals and competitions has resulted in numerous scholarships, trophies and awards. She was recently named Overall Most Promising Performer at the Burlington Rotary Music Festival. In the spring of 2011, she won the Michael Geryk Memorial Piano Competition. On September 25th, Andrea will play Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Cathedral Bluffs Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Norman Reintamm.

Patrick Bowman is an accomplished musician, actor and dancer. He is currently attending the voice performance programme at the University of Western Ontario on the Board of Governors’ Scholarship, under the instruction of Todd Wieczorak. He has studied with Tom Oliver and John Fanning. Patrick has completed RCM examinations with first class honours in Grade 10 Voice and Grade 8 Piano, as well as receiving distinctive recognition in harmony. Patrick is pursuing a career in musical theatre, and has recently portrayed the characters of Roger in Rent and Gilbert in Anne. This past summer, Patrick portrayed George in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Aspects of Love. Gary Smith of the Hamilton Spectator stated that Patrick was “best of all” in the show.

The Duet Club has been awarding scholarships for many years. Hear some of the finest young performers in our region who have scored high marks in the Royal Conservatory of Toronto examinations.


4th Annual Michael Geryk
Memorial Piano Competition

Michael Geryk was a well-known and much-loved piano technician for many years, caring for the pianos of countless area residents, as well as tuning pianos for professional concerts at Hamilton Place, the Boris Brott Festival, McMaster University, the Great Romantics Festival, and more.­ In 2002, Mike passed away at age 49, succumbing to injuries from a bicycling accident. A memorial scholarship was established and administered by the Hamilton Kiwanis Music Festival. With the closing of the Festival, the scholarship has become a Memorial Competition hosted by The
Duet Club of Hamilton.

Advanced piano students from the greater Hamilton region are invited to compete for a $500 scholarship. The live performance competition will feature up to four finalists each playing two contrasting works. The finalists will be determined by a recorded preliminary round.

Alina Barnett (soprano)

Alina is a Grade 12 honours student at Westmount Secondary School, with proficiency for math. She has been studying voice with Dr. Joan Heels for five years and completed her RCM Grade 8 Vocal Exam in June.

A short business meeting will be held at intermission. The Duet Club Annual Report will be presented for the approval of members.
